Open Access for Carers

UXL
In partnership with a range of Hackney local authority and carer organisations, UXL developed ‘Open Access for Carers’. The project engaged 58 carers in 120 hours of learning activity, through learning groups, by first identifying their needs, providing customised learning, and supporting the development of individual action plans. The programme was available in three venues and through online learning, for those unable to participate in the traditional way; this resulted in interactive networked learning and communication between two learning centres and a group of the carers in their homes. The project gave carers access to computers, laptops, the Internet and new digital technologies; including electronic emailing, digital audio, mobile internet, Dongles, digital video, web-conferencing and digital photography. The majority of carers indicated an increase in personal self-confidence and in their learning, an improvement in their ICT and learning skills, and a proportion progressed to further learning. Beneficiaries were predominately from ethic and minority groups, and included those for whom English was not a first language.
