Live Wire
Groundwork Leeds
Groundwork Leeds ‘Live Wire’ was a project that enabled disadvantaged offenders to access quality music tuition. Over six months, 25 offenders took part in weekly one-to-one guitar lessons; activities were also supported by an online handbook. The project worked with four halfway houses (approved premises), where some offenders serve the latter stages of their sentences, living there under curfew and some restricted conditions. The majority of the learners had poor literacy and numeracy skills, most had never had the opportunity to learn an instrument before, and all had only limited access to the Internet, resulting in the project having to find alternate strategies for support in between lessons; such as learners drawing their own guidance or marks being made on the guitar. All learners increased in confidence and engaged well with the project, which ended with a celebration event where some of the learners performed pieces that they had learnt.
