In Our Own Words

Blackburn with Darwen Council Neighbourhood and Learning Service
Led by Blackburn and Darwen Council, the ‘In our own words’ project was a platform both for selected third sector organisations within the region to showcase their services, and for the transfer of knowledge/ development of sustainable partnerships between the local authority and third sector in the region. Supported by a private-sector technical partner, the council worked alongside the Local Council for Voluntary Service and five third sector organisations supporting under-represented groups, namely; homeless people, older learners, ethnic minority women, NEETs, and people with learning disabilities. The project produced a DVD and showcase event, which illustrated each organisation’s service; 33 learners used digital video cameras, multimedia laptops, books and equipment (e.g. clapper boards) relating to film-making, and these resources are now available to regional third sector organisations. Learners acquired digital literacy skills and enhanced confidence. Wider benefits were increased community engagement, improved access to ICT, and joined-up services.
