Mining Durham's Hidden Depths View more...
The Mining Durham's Hidden Depths project aimed to make County Durham's mining heritage accessible to adult learners, including the disadvantaged, by exploiting an archive of international significance.
The project recruited, trained and supported adult learners to compile an index to names in the Durham Miners' Association archives. It is possible either to search the catalogue by the name of a particular individual or to browse all the entries.
The project produced a detailed, structured catalogue of the Durham Miners' Association archives and has made the catalogue available online. During the project:
- over 50,000 names were indexed in 6 months;
- 106 Learners acquired new skills in literacy, numeracy, information technology (IT), research, and indexing;
- learners were signposted to new learning opportunities; and
- a successful celebration event and project exhibition took place.
Durham County Record Office was awarded 'Archive Pace Setter Status' in March 2010 by the National Council on Archives for this project, an award for innovation and excellent project management.
Two main lessons arose from this project:
- it is important to have a full time project manager to oversee project activities;
- try to offer learning opportunities in a flexible manner; home-based learning was extremely popular with learners who, for example, might have a few hours in the evening when there was nothing on the television, and who wanted something fulfilling and worthwhile to do. This flexibility is also a major contributing factor to the continuing success and sustainability of the project.
