Birmingham Ethnic Education Advisory Service

With the support of the Transformation Fund, Birmingham Ethnic Education Advisory Service (BEEAS), a registered Charity in Birmingham, is creating a groundbreaking and bespoke informal learning environment in which Bangladeshi, Somali and Pakistani women are working together to determine and manage their own learning activities. and environment.

Birmingham Opera Company

Taking part in a performance - preparation, rehearsal and the applause - all add up to a thrilling learning experience. This project will engage a wide cross section of people from grass roots level in Birmingham. Starting with Taster Sessions and culminating in performances of Verdi's Othello, participants will be partnered by some of the UK's top operatic talent.

Bournville College of Further Education - Learning Links

Learning Links is about developing a network of volunteers, community mentors and champions, in order to spread the word about learning opportunities throughout South West Birmingham. The aim of the project is to identify and utilise skills of local people to encourage intergenerational, incidental and family learning, using the existing community networks and thereby spreading the learning bug.

Centre Spot Community Interest Company - Mentoring and Personal Development through Sports and Craft

The aim of the project will be to engage young people aged 19 - 25 from disadvantaged communities from Inner City Birmingham and Sandwell in a series of Arts and Craft Workshops supplemented by Sports, and complimented by Mentoring. The intention is of getting the target group active, discovering and connecting different learning experiences so that they can help to find what interests them and deepen their passion for learning.

Dudley Archives and Local History Service - Dudley Web: Past & Present

"Dudley Web: Past & Present" examines the business network in the borough through life stories of retired business people. Young people will record oral history and share on the internet via a micro-site of Dudley Archives and Local History Service. Parties will learn skills in technology and inter-generational life experience.

Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council - Artspace

The aim of our project is to:

  • Build partnerships and strengthen existing capacity by providing artists with skills and the tools to develop and deliver engaging informal learning clubs
  • Opening Up Access to new spaces through high street exhibition facilities for local artists where the general public can ‘drop in and try' various creative and visual art based activities supported by a range of local artists. Creating interest on the high street and a natural advertising medium for informal learning.

Fluid Space Arts - 100%

100% aims to create dynamic learning spaces that encourage creativity and enables participants to explore their future hopes, ideas and aspirations using a range of arts mediums. The project is aimed at young males (19- 35), the long term unemployed, single parents and people on a low income.

Go-Woman Ltd - First Steps: New Opportunities

‘First Steps - New Opportunities' project will engage women particularly from ‘hard to reach' communities in learning that can be introduced through targeted short taster sessions, developing a vibrant network of women accessing taster courses that can be mentored and supported to access further support, including recognised courses, training, business support and employment.

Groundwork Black Country

Our project will offer informal learning in five specific estates within the Black Country. We will look to form groups in each locality and help residents develop their own learning programme. This will include selecting what to learn, with everything from basic IT to dance on offer, and how they learn it.

Growing Rural Enterprise Ltd – The Wellies Project

The Wellies project will provide 36 one day training workshops for those recovering from mental health issues using animals plants and the countryside.
The project aims to promote wellness through informal learning opportunities which are fun, inspiring and build the confidence of participants.

Longden Co UK Ltd - Enjoy IT here: Building digital literacy in great locations

Aim To create an online "Village Learning Environment" to enable 1000 over 50 year olds to build confidence and competence in using digital technology to enjoy a new interest or skill. We will work with 10 Pass IT On Guides, a corporate partner, charities and will meet in ten enjoyable venues.

Longden Co UK Ltd - Enjoy IT mobile - learning anywhere, any time

To use mobile devices for fun, learning and social inclusion for up to 100 learners in order to do something new, useful and enjoyable. The project will build a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) using Moodle MLE and Mahara and train up four "Mobile Mentors" to facilitate blended learning solutions.

Northfield Ecocentre

This project seeks to establish a community led learning programme recognising that within our community there exists a large and diverse skills base that can be developed.

Through the project we will develop a network within the local community to support adults in learning new skills that contribute to sustainable living.

Pertemps People Development Group - Learnival

A schedule of Learning Road-shows, across the West Midlands, engaging with adult learners of all age groups in local communities and opening up their thirst for learning by creating a sustainable learning routine. "Learnival" will incorporate learning into a fun environment whilst enhancing existing community social and learning networks.

Potteries Museum & Art Gallery - The Podding Club

Retired people over 55 will learn to produce audioguides to Stoke-on-Trent's museums which will be available to download as podcasts from the museums' website, choosing subjects and treatments appealing to their own social group. They will cascade their knowledge to other groups who will produce podcasts reflecting their own interests.

SCAWDI - Boiled Cabbage

'Boiled Cabbage & Tapioca Pudding' - conjures up vivid memories of 1950s/60s schooldays & learning. Many found it grim & were put off for life. 'Cab & Tap' is a light-hearted & exciting activity based introduction to learning today. Creating new opportunities, stretching imaginations, exploring new worlds - the perfect course for people who 'don't do courses'.

SIFA Fireside: Digital Inclusion Project

SIFA Fireside is working in partnership with City College and Birmingham Libraries to deliver an exciting Digital Inclusion Project which will give a disadvantaged part of the local community the opportunity to acquire the skills to access email and the internet as a way to promote social inclusion.

Staffordshire County Council - Time out for Carers

The project will engage with carers and deliver informal learning activities in venues across Staffordshire Carers as a group seldom find time for themselves or take part in fun activities. They will work with Carers Associations in both north and south Staffordshire and build on a previous pilot.

Staffordshire University - Talking Shop

Delivered by Staffordshire University in collaboration with partner organisations. the Talking Shop is a suite of projects that will benefit communities in North Staffordshire by offering informal learning opportunities in creative activities that help people to express themselves with confidence - through creative work, social networking media and community radio.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council - Grow 'n' Know

Grow ‘n' Know will offers practical activities where adults can learn about designing and building an allotment or sensory garden, the natural environment or wildlife. Confidence building activities and sessions on digital photography and internet research will compliment the offer for participants' who want to develop their skills further.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council - StokeReads

The project will create reading groups targeting mainly older people and adults with mental health issues. Volunteers and staff will be trained to facilitate groups and to widen their reading knowledge. The project will promote reading as a tool which improves mental wellbeing by encouraging conversation and social interaction, supporting creative thinking and stretching the imagination.

The Birmingham Arthritis Appeals Trust

BARC provides education and support to people with arthritis and their carers. The aim is to promote self-coping - to deal with the physical and social disabilities caused by their disease.

Evidence shows that "excluded groups" have poorer health and do not access the NHS in the same way as the white middle-class population due to culture, language and poverty barriers.

The Birmingham Rep - Performing Arts Through Digital Technology

Based in the Northfield community, the project provides a range of performing arts and creative taster experiences to engage local people into informal learning opportunities and lead into a series of more in depth workshops to encourage interest in the arts and the digital technologies that support production and performance.

The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council

The project will pilot Our Place learning venues in empty town-centre shops in Taunton and Blackburn. Learners will interrogate the changing identity of their towns to generate a community archive and be inspired to take up other local learning oppportunities.

The projects will generate a "How To" guide, which will support the development of other venues in areas of growth and regeneration.

The Raymond Williams Foundation

This project aims to extend North Staffordshire Open Democracy Discussion Circles (ODDc) and Liverpool Philosophy in Pubs (PiPs) to more locations. We will map similar discussion circles, such as café philosophiques, to share experience and training at a residential course, with planned progression to WEA day and residential courses.

WEA West Midlands Region - Learning Partnerships for Health

WEA West Midlands will work with health and social care groups and digital mentors to pilot health education courses using digital based technology for those who experience difficulties in participating in conventional face to face classes. Target groups include those with long term medical conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, and their carers.

Yemeni Community Association in Sandwell Ltd - The Sandwell Yemeni Community Association’s Fathers Family Learning Program

The Sandwell Yemeni Community Association's Fathers Family Learning Program will bring fathers (in particular the Arabic speaking communities) to engage in learning and social opportunities alongside their children promoting intergenerational learning.
