The Allotment Gardening Club

East Durham College
Through the Allotment Gardening Club project, East Durham College established an allotment at the Houghall Campus to encourage a wide range of adults and families in the local community to acquire new skills through a range of informal hands-on learning opportunities. Over 65 regular learners were engaged. Allotment learning activities included gardening and vegetable growing to encourage healthy food eating, enhanced health and wellbeing and education for sustainable development. The allotment was open seven days a week and learning was flexible - learners could come and go as they pleased. The project offered learners funding support for travel and childcare support. A range of e-learning materials, as well as newsletters and booklets, were produced to facilitate learning and to enable learners to share knowledge with each other.
